Book review of
Salt & Broom by Sharon Lynn Fisher
This Jane Eyre retelling has been popping up on my feed and I went in with low expectations but the writing and storytelling blew me away. Salt & Broom is a serious contender for my book of the year. Jane Aire an orphan turned herbalist is hired by the reclusive Edward Rochester to investigate and deal with a mysterious force at Thornfield Hall.
The paranormal element at place here is as delightful as the mystery that unfolds enveloping Rochester's past wife and Jane's own history. Jane is a strong enticing heroine who has the moxie to go places she's forbidden and the kind heart that makes everyone swoon.
Did I mention there's a cat and a poison garden?
Truly, if Gothic houses and strong intriguing heroines with a glimmer of magical power interest you, this must move to the top of your to be read pile immediately. For the Jane Eyre die-hard fans, please know going in that you'll be expecting a true retelling and you'll get some wonderful twists that hopefully will find a place in your heart for this masterfully written tale of Thornfield, Jane, and Mr. Rochester. I think fans of T. Kingfisher's horror will also delight in these pages.
A five star must read.
